|
| |
During the Nara period, some craftsmen were sent from Hida to the capital for the construction of various buildings at the woodwork dormitory and Imperial Court Ministry. They were called “Takumi” of Hida.
“Kanikakuni Monowa Omowaji Hidabitono Utsu Suminawano Tada Ichidouni”
It is one of the love songs in Manyoshu ("Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves") meaning, “I should not worry about anything. I just believe him straight as the inked string Hida craftsmen use.”

Characteristics of Houses in Furukawa Town
The technique of Takumi in Hida has been thoroughly carried down to the present day. Taking a walk around this old town, you can see the restful houses of Furukawa built by the modern “Takumi” who possesses the traditional techniques of carpenters of Furukawa.

 |
| Furukawa town, there is a succeeding architectural design of "houses" that has kept the history and the tradition to the present. |
 |
[Bay Window]
In Shinmachi houses, a bay window is often present. Because houses have become higher, the roof does not suffice to block the rain, sunshine etc. and thus eaves called “Shimo-yoke (Frost protection)” are often attached. |
 |
[Outside Wall, Outdoor Protrusion]
The main characteristic of houses in Furukawa now and then is the wall showing the pillars called “Makabe”. Recently, there is a white wall of storehouse made from soil and mortar. There is also a house which outdoor part of air conditioning and gas canister of propane gas have a cover looking like the lattice. |
 |
[Extended Lattice]
An extended lattice is one of distinct features of the town traditionally and even for now. Current trend is a use of many lattices (one thousand lattice window) so that it is hard to see inside from the outside path. Also a technique as “securing the space lattice” is used in order to gain brightness inside the house. |
 |
[Front Door]
In the old days, there was a device called “Odo (Large door)” which was left open during daytime by raising it or through the ditch opening. At night, the door was closed and people used “Kugurido (Attached small door within Odo)”. Nowadays, a double sliding door is used more. |
