Michi no Eki Sky Dome, Kamioka

Michi no Eki Sky Dome has many special products, souvenirs, and local gourmet dishes from the Hida.

Michi no Eki, Sky Dome Kamioka is located a one hour’s drive away from the center of Toyama city and the Takayama city center. The Hida Space Science Museum KamiokaLab was added on March 2019. There is a souvenir shop that sells famous confections and local specialty products and a restaurant where you can enjoy the flavors of Hida.

Souvenir shop

You will find Hida beef curry and KamiokaLab goods at the store. Out of these many souvenirs, we recommend hoba-miso by Funatsu Shoyu. Hoba (magnolia leaves) miso is a simple yaki-miso, all-purpose seasoning loved by the people in Hida. It is used for hoba-yaki and yaki-onigiri (toasted rice-ball) which are dishes that go well with sake. Funatsu Shoyu has used tub barrels made of Japanese cedar wood for the fermentation of miso since its foundation in 1919. Aspergillus is absorbed into the aging cedar wood barrels, which makes for richer tasting miso. Hoba miso, called “Yamanosachi”, is sold for 850 yen. There are three flavors: walnut, sansho pepper, and egoma (wild sesame) oil. They are easy to use since they are individually packaged.

Sake by Otsubo Syuzoten is also recommended. It goes well with the hoba-miso by Funatsu Syoyu. Otsubo Syuzoten is an old sake brewery which has been making sake since it was established in 1842. Hida-musume, a sweet sake and Shindai, a dry sake, are popular brands. At Sky Dome, Otsubo Syuzoten and the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research, University of Tokyo have collaborated in making a special label for the Shindai sake. The bottle resembles the tank inside the Super-Kamikande, which makes it the perfect gift. Glasses of sake are also available for 420 yen.

Fast food corner and Restaurant

In Sky Dome Kamioka, there is a snack corner and a restaurant where you can stop even if you’re just passing. At the snack corner there are a few local favorites you can enjoy: the tempura manju (sweet buns with smooth bean paste); the egoma ice cream cones, which use rich Jersey milk from the Yamanomura Ranch in Kamiokacho and are topped with sesame seeds and sesame sauce. The egoma ice cream cones are sold for 380 yen. At the restaurant, you can enjoy the Hida Chinese noodle bowl or the Hida Misokatsu meal set.
